About
Us
The
Discipline of General Practice was established in 1991, with Professor
Sandy Reid as the foundation professor. Currently there are 16 people
working in the Discipline, including 3 research assistants, 4 administrative
staff and 9 academic staff. The Discipline has resolved to focus
on General Practice as a Discipline in its own right, with its own
rationale, practices, procedures and body of research. The Discipline
has a lively research interest.
Research aims to
- Reflect
the priorities of GPs in the area (working with Divisions of General
Practice, practical focus on what is useful for the practising
clinician)
- Provide
leadership in areas seen as important by member of the discipline
(disadvantage, ethical issues, evaluation of educational initiatives,
rural issues, evidence based medicine)
- Explore
the Commonwealth's priorities in terms of primary health care
(models of primary health care, working in an interdisciplinary
fashion).
The Discipline
is also developing teaching in undergraduate
and postgraduate areas. Assoc Prof Dimity Pond is currently the co-supervisor
(with Prof Dave Roberts - Nutrition and Dietetics) of a PhD Student
researching the role of nutrition support in the primary health care
setting.
