Recognition process

What is Recognition Assessment?

The term Recognition Assessment is used as the preferred alternative for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competence (RCC) and Skills Recognition to describe this important process. All terms refer to recognition of competencies currently held, regardless of how, when or where the learning occurred.

Recognition Assessment is a form of competency based assessment used to determine whether a person has achieved, through informal and/or formal learning and experience the required competence for entry and/or exemption into an accredited learning and assessment program. It is an opportunity to have your competencies, however acquired, formally recognised and credited towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Every learning and assessment program in a qualification has a set of competency units and associated performance criteria that must be achieved before an individual will be deemed competent in that learning and assessment program.

In broad terms the Recognition Assessment process involves matching what you already know and can do with the performance criteria of a stated qualification. If you can show that you have already attained the learning outcomes for one or more learning and assessment programs you will not have to do those learning and assessment programs. In this way Recognition Assessment enables you to focus on developing your skills and knowledge in new areas, rather than relearning what you already know and can do.
